Living for God’s Approval
Living for God's Approval
Luke 3:21–22 says "When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: 'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.'"
Run to Receive the Prize
In the 1800s, Scottish athlete Eric Liddell, famously depicted in Chariots of Fire, was an incredible runner. But the approval of God was more important to him than the approval of man. When the Olympic schedule conflicted with his Sunday worship, he refused to compete, even though it meant missing a chance for a gold medal in his best race. Instead, he competed in a different race later in the week and won gold in an event he wasn’t expected to succeed in. Eric’s decision wasn’t about pleasing people or gaining applause—it was about honoring God. He famously said, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.”
God’s Beloved Son
When Jesus was baptized, God declared His love and approval over Him. Jesus hadn’t yet performed miracles or preached to crowds, but God was already pleased with Him because of who He was—His beloved Son. This reminds us that God loves us, not because of what we accomplish, but because of who we are in Him.
Things to Ponder
-How can we honor God at school, work, or home? (Examples: Being kind, truthful, and faithful in responsibilities.)
-What can we do when we’re tempted to seek approval from others instead of God?
Prayer Prompt
“Dear God, thank You for loving us just as we are, Your children. Help us to live in a way that pleases You, not seeking the approval of people, but knowing we are loved by You. Amen.”
