Faith that Endures
In 1956, five missionaries traveled to Ecuador to share the gospel with the Waorani people, a remote and isolated tribe. Despite their peaceful efforts, the missionaries were tragically killed. But their story didn’t end there—through forgiveness and perseverance, their families later built relationships with the very people who had taken their loved ones’ lives. Many in the tribe came to faith, not through fear or force, but through the radical love and grace these families demonstrated.
Read Luke 21:5-18
Luke 21:17-19 says:
"Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life."
When Jesus spoke of trials and persecution, He wasn’t encouraging His followers to view themselves as victims, nor was He calling them to fight back. Instead, He prepared them to endure with faith. He reminded them that no hardship could separate them from God’s love or prevent His kingdom from advancing.
Many of Jesus’ disciples faced real persecution—imprisonment, exile, and even martyrdom. Yet, they didn’t respond with fear or retaliation. They remained faithful, continuing to love, serve, and share the gospel even in the midst of hardship.
For most of us, following Jesus won’t mean facing life-threatening persecution. But we will experience challenges—misunderstanding, rejection, or seasons of doubt. Jesus’ words remind us that faith isn’t about winning arguments or proving a point; it’s about standing firm in love, grace, and truth no matter what comes our way.
Things to Ponder:
Jesus calls us to endurance, not defensiveness. Are we standing firm in faith with grace and humility?
How can we respond with love and perseverance when faith feels difficult?
