True Religion in Action
In the 1700s, John Wesley preached all over England, urging people to follow Jesus not just in words but in action. He believed that true faith meant caring for the poor, visiting prisoners, and standing up for those in need. Wesley didn’t just talk about these things—he lived them. He gave away most of his income, started schools for poor children, and worked tirelessly to help others. His life showed what James 1:27 describes as “true religion”—faith that is active, compassionate, and pure before God.
Read James 1:19-27
James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote this letter to help believers understand that real faith is more than just knowing what is right—it’s about doing what is right. He warns against being quick to speak and slow to listen, reminds us that anger doesn’t produce a godly life, and challenges us to live out our faith by caring for those in need and staying pure instead of seeking after the things of this world.
Things to Ponder
Listening vs. Speaking – Why do you think James emphasizes listening before speaking? How does this help in everyday life?
Faith in Action – Why is it important to do what the Bible says instead of just hearing or reading it?
Caring for Others – Why do you think James specifically mentions orphans and widows? What does this teach us about God’s priorities?
Staying Unstained – How can we live in the world but not be shaped by its negative influences?
Application Challenge
This week, let’s focus on living out our faith in small but real ways:
Listen First: When someone talks to you, practice truly listening before responding.
Speak with Kindness: Make it a goal to say at least one encouraging thing to someone each day.
Help Someone in Need: Look for a simple way to care for someone—a kind note, a small gift, or even just checking in on a friend or neighbor.
Reflect on God’s Word: Choose one verse from this passage to memorize or think about each day.
Prayer Prompt
"God, help us not just to hear Your Word, but to live it out. Give us hearts that listen well, words that encourage, and hands that help those in need. Keep us close to You and help us to reflect Your love in all we do. Amen."
