The Fruit of the Spirit
John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was a real person who lived in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He traveled across the frontier planting apple trees, but he didn’t have to stay behind to tend each one. He knew that if the tree was planted in the right soil and had access to water and sunlight, it would grow and produce fruit on its own. Once the tree was healthy and well-rooted, it didn’t need constant effort to make it bear apples—it was simply in its nature to do so.
Read of Galatians 5:22-26
In Galatians 5, Paul explains that when we live according to the Holy Spirit, our lives naturally begin to show certain qualities—just like a healthy apple tree naturally grows apples. We don’t have to force it; the Holy Spirit helps us develop these traits as we stay connected to God.
A tree doesn’t grow fruit in a single day—it takes time, care, and patience. In the same way, God is growing His character in us over time. The more we walk with Him, the more we will see His fruit growing in our lives.
Just as an apple tree doesn’t try harder to make apples—it just does because it’s healthy—when we live by the Spirit, these qualities will develop in us as a result of God’s work, not our own striving. Our role is simply to stay connected to Him, trusting that His Spirit will shape us from the inside out.
Things to Ponder
What happens if a tree doesn't get water, sunlight, or protection?
How is this like our spiritual lives when we don’t spend time with God?
Why do you think these nine qualities are called the "fruit" of the Spirit and not "fruits"?
They are all part of one transformed life in Jesus, not separate things we pick and choose.
Which fruit of the Spirit do you see the most in your life? Which one do you need to grow in?
It’s okay if we aren’t perfect! Just like trees take time to grow, God is still working on us.
Application Challenge
This week, pick one fruit of the Spirit to focus on as a family. Maybe it’s patience—waiting without complaining. Or kindness—going out of your way to help someone. Each day, ask each other how you’re doing with that fruit. Encourage one another and celebrate small victories!
Prayer Prompt
Lord, Thank You for planting Your Spirit in our hearts so that we can grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help us to stay connected to You and make room for Your Spirit to work in us. Just like a tree needs good soil and water, we need You to help us grow strong. May our lives bear good fruit that blesses others and glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
